Chabangu on fire as Birds fly over Sundowns
Lerato Chabangu of Moroka Swallows celebrates his second goal with teammates during the MTN 8 match
Bennet Chenene scored the third goal of the match as he did in the first leg, while Teko Modise and Nyasha Mushekwi got their names on the score sheet for the Brazilians.
The hosts got the first effort on target in the fourth minute when Lebohang Mokoena connected with a freekick from Teko Modise, but his header was saved by Greg Etafia.
However, it was the Dube Birds who opened the scoring six minutes later when Felix Obada found Siyabonga Nomvethe unmarked on the right side of the penalty area and the veteran did well to lay the ball across for Chabangu to sidefoot the ball into the net.
Chabangu continued to torment his former side in the 14th minute as he received another pass from Nomvethe before firing an unstoppable shot towards the roof of the net.
Nomvethe and Chabangu combined again in the 18th minute but the latter was denied a quick hat-trick by a good save from Sandilands. However, Swallows did add to their tally a minute later when Chenene headed home from the rebound after Sandilands had stopped an effort from Lefa Tsutsulupa.
Sundowns did reduce the deficit in the 23rd minute through a well-struck freekick from Modise as he beat the wall and the goalkeeper with a right-footed curler towards the far post.
The visitors had two more chances to make the scoreline more respectable before the break but Langerman curled his freekick wide in the 35th minute, while Hlompho Kekana also missed the target with a strike from a distance ten minutes later.
Johan Neeskens made a change two minutes into the second half, bringing on Mushekwi in place of midfielder Thami Sangweni, and the Zimbabwean striker almost made his presence felt in the 57th minute, only for his shot to come off the upright.
Eight minutes later Mushekwi was in the thick of things against, connecting with a cross from Langerman to get his header on target, but in the end it was a comfortable save from Etafia.
Then in the 71st minute Modise saw his long range strike flashing just wide of the upright, while Chabangu was denied by a one-handed save from Sandilands at the other end two minutes later.
Swallows missed two opportunities to kill the game with eight minutes left on the clock, but substitute Katlego Mashego saw his effort going wide, while Nomvethe was denied by Sandilands seconds later.
Mushekwi then missed a great chance to reduce the lead in the 89th minute, shooting wide from the centre of the penalty area, but he did finally get a consolation goal in the third minute of added time, blasting the ball into the roof of the net after a defensive error.
That goal proved to be too little too late as the referee blew his whistle seconds later to send Swallows into the final.
Moroka Swallows (3) 3 (Chabangu 10’ 14’, Chenene 19’)
Mamelodi Sundowns (1) 2 (Modise 23’, Mushekwi 90 + 3’)
