After finally fulfilling their potential and securing promotion to the Absa Premiership, the University of Pretoria now face an even tougher challenge in trying to consolidate their top flight status.
AmaTuks has long been a stepping stone for talented young players to end up in the PSL – the likes of Andile Jali and Lerato Chabangu are prime examples of this – but now they need to start keeping hold of their best and brightest and even add to their youthful squad by bringing in some much-needed experience.
To an extent they have already managed this, bringing former player Warren Bishop back into the fold as well as the likes of Buhle Mkhwanazi and Lionel Mutizwa from Mamelodi Sundowns, veteran striker David Radebe and Vincent Kobola from Jomo Cosmos.
Coach Steve Barker is nothing if not a canny and determined operator, and he will be looking to take his team to a new level. It will be a tough task, and teams promoted from the First Division have rarely set the PSL alight in their first season, but Tuks are a well-run organisation that has a good shot of bucking the trend.
The University-based team has been in existence since 2003 (when Tuks bought out Pretoria City’s second division status) and will want to eventually be as established in the PSL as city rivals Sundowns and SuperSport United.
