Back in South Africa slimmer than he was and hungry to win silverware with Pirates.
At 33 and with his massive experience, McCarthy could be the perfect mentor for Under 23 star striker Ndulula.
Having won the Uefa Champions League while at FC Porto, McCarthy says he now wants to win the African Champions League with Bucs.
McCarthy is South Africa’s most successful player since re-admission to Fifa in 1992, having played for Ajax Amsterdam, Celta Vigo, Porto, Blackburn Rovers and West Ham United.
Mid-Season Profile
Injuries and suspension have restricted Benni McCarthy to 11 starts (added to five appearances off the bench) in the Absa Premiership this season but he has still racked up seven goals and looked a class act when fit and firing.
Season Wrap up
There were fears that Mccarthy would treat his time as Pirates as a chance to unwind in his career, but those were far off the mark as his goals played a big role in them winning three trophies this season.
What’s more, he started almost two third of their League matches and by the end of the campaign was finishing games too, his fitness worries seemingly something of the past.
