He was formerly on the books of Pirates’ junior ranks and also played amateur football at Sicilians before being snapped up by the Amakhosi last season.
Nicknamed ‘Manenzhe’, after Phumudzo Manenzhe, the former Orlando Pirates striker, Mateba is said to have a promising future in the game, but only made two appearances last season running on as a substitute twice for a total of 26 minutes of play.
Still, his time spent on the bench and with the likes of the international Kaizer Chiefs players will serve him well in the future.
In his second season at Chiefs, Mateba is still just a fringe player for the club and has only started one game of the 2011/12 league season thus far.
He is there as back-up to the more recognised strikers and is unlikely to get much game time, but will make the occasional appearance from the bench.
Season Wrap up
The 23-year-old made his first League start for the side in this season, one of just two appearances for him though.
He looks to have something about him, but his attitude to hard graft was questioned by the previous coach Vladimir Vermezovic and he saw little action.
