Akpabio for surgery
Ajax Cape Town Nigerian striker George Akpabio is to undergo surgery in South Africa for a nagging ankle complaint.

The former Plateau United striker told MTNFootball.com that he has nursed the injury for some months before he was finally advised by doctors to undergo an operation.

“I will do the surgery during the holidays and be back fit and ready for action in the coming season,” Akpabio disclosed.

He will therefore miss a planned holiday in Nigeria as a result of this surgery.

The striker, who scored 17 goals for Plateau United last season in the Nigeria Premier League, joined Ajax during the winter transfer window.

He scored a goal for the Cape Town outfit, who stayed outside the top-eight bracket this season after they contested for the championship the previous campaign.

Akpabio said he was disappointed Ajax finished outside the top eight in the South African top flight this past season.

"I was aiming for the title, but at the later part of the season when that was not possible, we are looking at top 8, but we lost even that on the last day (of the season),” said the big Fernando Torres fan.

“I was sad about it but I know next season will be much better."
