Celtic sign Lawler
Bloemfontein
Celtic have signed former Kaizer Chiefs defender Brent Lawler, the club
announced on Thursday.
Lawler can play
either as a right-back or a centre-back, and has likely been on board as cover
for the departing Erick Mathoho.
The 22-year-old
came through the University of Pretoria Academy, before going on to play
college football in the USA. He returned to the PSL and Chiefs at the start of
last season, but failed to make an impression at Naturena and was released.
“We are delighted
to have signed this young man. We have no doubt he will do well for us. He will
be surrounded by equally good players and will add to the quality of our
defence,” Celtic CEO Khumbulani Konco says.
The player too is
delighted with the move.
“I’m happy to be
here. Change of scene is never bad. I was looking for a club where I can be
given an opportunity to play and this is the place,” Lawler says.
“I have already
met the coach and my teammates – and I don’t regret joining Celtic. They are a
big and ambitious club with fantastic supporters. I have always wanted to play
for them. Just because I’m coming from Chiefs, I’m not expecting to walk into
the starting line-up. I’m going to fight for my position in the team,” he adds.
