Sundowns conclude Rodgers deal
Mamelodi Sundowns have completed the
signing of Santos striker Eleazar Rodgers on a four-year deal, the club
announced on Thursday.
The Brazilians are believed to have paid
R7-million for the forward after beating off competition from BidVest Wits.
Rodgers had suggested that his favoured
destination was in fact Wits to team up against with former Santos coach Roger
de Sa, but once the latter was axed on Monday it seems to have paved the way
for his move to Chloorkop.
“Mamelodi Sundowns are a big side and I
know that the pressure is higher here but I wouldn’t have signed for them if I
was not up for the challenge. I will work very hard for my chance to play and I
hope to help the team reach their goals,” Rodgers says.
The 27-year-old will face competition from
Katlego Mphela (when fit), Nyasha Mushekwi, Richard Henyekane, Anthony Laffor
and new Ghanaian signing Emmanuel Baffour.
Rodgers netted 12 goals in the Absa
Premiership last season, finishing second on the scorers charts behind
Siyabonga Nomvete.
He received a call-up to the national side
for the internationals in June, but did not make it onto the park to add to his
two caps.
