George Akpabio has lampooned a report that his former club Plateau United received a meagre $3000 from Ajax Cape Town as his transfer fee.

"I was disgusted to read in a Nigerian paper that I was sold to Ajax by Plateau United for $3,000. That is ridiculous!,” said Akpabio, who scored 17 goals in the Nigeria Premier League last season before he moved to South Africa in January.

“I was sold for a reasonable price. My transfer fee was $80,000 and Plateau United are entitled to 20% of my further sale by Ajax Cape Town.

“I don't know why some people just write whatever they feel like. I don't know where that person got the information that was nowhere close to the truth. You could even contact Plateau United officials to confirm this."

Akpabio also told MTNFootball.com that there has been contact from South African second division side FC Cape Town in respect of having him on loan for this new season.

"It is true there was an approach from FC Cape Town for me to play for them on loan but nothing has been agreed," Akpabio disclosed.

The striker is recovering from surgery and could well be shipped out on loan so that Ajax do not exceed their quota for foreign players.
