Brett Evans' possible move to MLS club Portland Timbers is looking less likely after they signed former Rangers full-back Steven Smith on Wednesday evening.

The Ajax Cape Town defender went on a week's trial at the Oregan based club and it was said that he impressed former Chelsea player and current coach, John Spencer.

Evens returned to the Cape two weeks ago and was expected to hear something later this week.

Reports suggested that in order for Evans to make the move, Timbers would have to let go of a player and they have since released midfielder James Marcelin.

“Steven (Smith) has impressed us, both on the field and as a person, during his trial,” said John Spencer.

“He is a hard-working defender who possesses a winning mentality. Steven has been a part of successful clubs throughout his career and has experience at high levels, including playing in the Champions League.”

Evans is the highest capped player for the Urban Warriors and may resort to looking for another club after his contract at Ikamva comes to an end in June 2012.

The 30-year-old has been on two other previous trials in the United States of America, several years back.
