Cosmos relegated again
Late goals by Tshidiso Tukane and Matthew Rusike could not save Jomo Cosmos from relegation in the Premier Soccer League as two goals by Black Leopards captain Mongezi Bobe saw the Absa Premiership match end in an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Sinaba Stadium on Wednesday night.
The relegation is Jomo Sono’s third in row after being promoted and then relegated the last three times they have found themselves in the top flight.
Cosmos should have opened the scoring in the ninth minute when a right-footed shot by winger Katlego Loke from the right channel 20-yards out hit the post.
In the 16th minute, Jomo Sono’s men had another opportunity to open the scoring when a shot by Matthew Rusike with his right foot on the left from 18-yards out went over the bar.
Two minutes later, Leopards captain Mongezi Bobe could have handed the visitors the lead when his right-footed attempt from the right side of the field just inside the box went over the bar.
A minute before half-time Leopards had another attempt when Ernort Dzaga unleashed a right-footed shot from 35-yards on the right, but was saved by Cosmos keeper Avril Phali.
In the 45th minute Bobe again had a long range attempt, but his shot from the right channel, 25-yards from goal, again had the same result when it went over the bar.
The second half proved much more entertaining with four goals found in the last 18 minutes.
Cosmos fell behind the 72nd minute after great work from Raymond Monama on the left flank as he beat a defender before sending the ball into the area which was safely tucked into the back of the net by Bobe, 1-0.
Leopards doubled their lead four minutes later through the same man.
Bobe controlled the ball on the edge of the box as he went from the left side to the centre and unleashed a curling left footed shot that beat Cosmos keeper Avril Phali, 2-0.
The match had seemed won by Leopards, but the Ezenkosi pulled one back six minutes from time.
Tukane, who had only just came on as a substitute two minutes earlier, got Cosmos back into the match. A goal mouth scrambled ensued in the box and Tukane guided the ball into the net, 2-1.
Ezenkosi were then handed a lifeline in the relegation battle when Leopards squandered the two goal lead.
Siyabonga Nhlapo showed some vision as he found Rusike who beat the off-side trap and the Leopards keeper to make it 2-2 in the 88th minute.
Cosmos have now been automatically relegated from the PSL for the third consecutive time whilst Leopards are not safe yet as they are only two points ahead of Santos in the fight for survival and try to avoid the relegation/promotion play-offs.
