Mpho Maruping of University of Pretoria challenged by Siyanda Zwane of Golden Arrows
A first half-strike from Mpho Maruping handed the University of Pretoria their first win in the Absa Premiership as they recorded a 1-0 victory over Lamontville Golden Arrows at the Cedric Sugar Ray Stadium on Wednesday night.

The visitors then had to absorb a lot of pressure in the second half to protect their lead, while they looked to stretch their advantage using counter-attacks.

The first chance of the match fell for the home side in the eighth minute as new striker Boitumelo Sekgobela used his speed and strength to get into the box from the left before playing a low cross towards Philani Shange at the far post, only for his shot to be  deflected wide of the post.

Despite holding a larger share of the ball possession, Muhsin Ertugral's side were unable to create clear scoring chances as they were guilty of losing the ball too easily in the final third.

As the first half went on it was the visitors who started gaining enough confidence to venture into goal scoring areas and in the 17th minute Lionel Mutizwa saw his long range shot curling wide of the post.

The visitors then started asking more questions as Dispy Selolwane sent his shot wide in the 21st minute before former AmaZulu striker Dumisani Ngwenya saw his shot going straight to Pavels Steinbors seven minutes later.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 37th minute when Arrows failed to deal with a high ball delivered into the box, allowing Mpho Maruping to head past Steinbors to give his side a 1-0 lead at half-time.

Tuks were almost gifted another goal straight after the break when Ritus Krjauklis lost the ball near his box, but a sliding tackle from Souleymane Keita stopped Dipsy Selolwane as he was about to take a shot.

Ngwenya also had a chance to register his name in the score sheet in the 70th minute but fired his powerful shot wide of the upright, while Dillon Sheppard saw his free kick fumbled by goalkeeper Washington Arubi two minutes later.

The rest of the match saw Arrows contnuing to attack without much penetration as Tuks held on for maximum points.
