Baptism of fire for Chippa
Mamelodi Sundowns will begin their 2012/13 PSL season by hosting top flight rookies Chippa United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday, 11 August 2012, kick-off at 20h15.
‘Downs ended fourth in the 2011/12 league standings, a disappointing result considering they were top of the log for a large portion of the season.
The Brazilians’ aim this season will be to win the PSL crown for a record-extending sixth time, adding to the titles they won in 1997/98, 1998/99, 1999/00, 2005/06 and 2006/07.
The Pretoria club will face stiff competition from current champions Orlando Pirates as well as the likes of Kaizer Chiefs, Moroka Swallows and SuperSport United.
As for Chippa, they are making their PSL debut just three years after being formed. The Cape Town club has rocketed up the divisions to become one of the most remarkable stories in South African football in recent years.
The Chilli Boys, as they are known, finished second in the National First Division last season, four points behind champions University of Pretoria.
Chippa then entered the promotion/relegation playoff tournament and went unbeaten in a mini-league against Thanda Royal Zulu and Santos, deservedly earning promotion to the top flight.
Their aim this season will be to consolidate their place in the PSL and ensure that they do no drop straight back down to the NFD.
It will be a tough task for the Cape side, and they will have a true baptism of fire in playing five-time PSL champions Sundowns away in their first match, but they have become used to defying the odds.
