A probe into the finances of NPL side Enugu Rangers has begun by the sports committee of the Enugu State House of Assembly.

Chairman of the committee Paul Ogbe stated that the inquest became necessary due to the fact that the Rangers management has failed to properly brief the committee on their expenditure so as to help the committee plan for the club’s budget in the coming year, just as two former players petitioned the house over some alleged sharp practices at the club.

“The Enugu State House of Assembly Committee on Sports summoned the management team of Rangers to ascertain how much of 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 budget they were able to access and how they spent same so as to help them properly source for the 2013 season,” said Ogbe

“Also, we have two petitions from their former players, Brendan Ogbu and Fredrick Okwara, who are calling for the payment of their entitlements from the club.”

Ogbe further said, “Okwara is calling for the payment of the sum of 4.5 million Naira being a balance of his sign-on fees for 2010/2011 as well as 15% of the 95,000 Euros that accrued from his movement to Turkish side Adanaspor in his petition to the house, while Ogbu, on his part, is seeking attention of the house to compel Rangers to pay up his entitlements for 2001/2010 and 2010/2011 season.

“Surely these are not cases that we should sweep under the carpet as we are sure that enough budgetary provisions were made to the club.”

Among the house committee on sports members who were present at the probe session were Johnbull Nwagu, Dame Nkechi Omeje-Ogbu and Joseph Ugwumba.

The committee accepted the plea of the Rangers general manager Paul Chibuzor to attend a seminar in Lagos while advising Clement Ukwu, Rangers director of finance, to come up with an up-to-date record of the club’s financial transactions in the period under review.

The committee stressed that failure to come up with the required documents might lead to the club not getting funds for the coming season.
