The email account of ex-Nigeria star Garba Lawal has been hacked by fraudsters who are demanding for cash from his unsuspecting contacts.

“My yahoo email account has been hacked and as such I cannot even log into it any longer,” Lawal informed MTNFootball.com

“I have received calls from various contacts who have received mails purportedly from me from this address.

“The mails they have received are not from me and they should please discountenance them.”

The fraudulent mail from Lawal’s email account was titled ‘Emergency’ and demanded a contact to pay him 1,200 Euros to enable him pay off his hotel bills as he and his family are currently stranded in Spain following the loss of his wallet and credit cards.

Lawal, who played professionally in Holland, Greece and China, is now on the management board of Nigeria Premier League side Kaduna United and he is also on the technical committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Identity theft is increasing among some of the country’s top stars.

Only recently Moroka Swallows of South Africa goalkeeper Greg Etafia suffered a similar fate when his telephone line was cloned by fraudsters in Johannesburg, who demanded for cash from contacts to bail him out of a fictitious traffic offence.

Top football personalities like former CAF and FIFA executive Amos Adamu and Segun Odegbami have also had their email accounts hacked.
