Wolves game abandoned after attack

The match between Warri Wolves and Rising Stars was abandoned in the first half after a Rising Stars player was attacked, officials said.

Rising Stars chairman Fisayo Akinkuade told MTNFootball.com that it was a show of shame in Warri that fans could attack and beat up a harmless player getting set to do his job.

"What happened in Warri was a shameful act. How on earth would such thing happen at a match venue? The NPL must act fast and do something,” said the furious Rising Stars boss.

“What happened was that our striker was kicked very badly on the field, so another player, Bajowa Segun, was asked to warm up in case the striker injured couldn't continue, the next thing we saw was two fans of Wolves descended on him and started beating him. They removed the corner flag and used it to beat him.

“We had no choice than not to continue the game."

Rising scored first through Shedrack Francis, before Wolves equalised courtesy of Akeem Yakubu.

The game was abandoned at 1-1.
