Sibi Gwar shoots on in goals race
NPL leading hotshot Sibi Gwar
Sibi Gwar fires to the top
Niger Tornadoes ace Sibi Gwar
consolidated his leadership of the NPL goals chart when he netted his 14th
goal against Pillars Wednesday.
With nine rounds of games to be played before the end of the NPL 2011/2012 season, the race for the league hotshot has moved up a gear.
However, one of the early front runners for the Goal King award Mustapha Babadidi of Gombe United is effectively out of the contest as he only recently underwent a knee surgery which has ruled him out for the rest of the season.
But even in the absence of the 16-year-old striker, the competition has been fierce among other proven strikers in the championship.
The 24-year-old Gwar is a natural goal buster and his target remains to consign to the history books the all-time 20-goal record set by Jude Aneke last season.
"My target is to set new record in Nigeria league and with the remaining number of games, I could still score seven goals to erase Aneke's record," Sibi told MTNFootball.com
Kano Pillars star striker Gambo Mohammed is closely behind Gwar as he has so far fired 11 goals for his table-topping club.
He told MTNFootball.com that he has his eyes set on two big prizes – the league crown and top scorer's gong.
Chikeluba Ofoedu of Rangers has scored 10 goals in his debut season in the top flight, but he has now gone five straight games without a goal as his club fight to stay within striking distance of the title chasers.
Jigawa Golden Stars Bala Mohammed and Dele Olorundare of Sunshine Stars are both on nine goals with Olorundare showing great consistency by scoring his team’s last three games.
A clutch of players including Sharks pair of Gomo Onduku and Bright Ejike as well as Sanusi Sani of Gombe United are all on 8 goals.
In the meantime, last season’s leading scorers like Aneke, Azuka Ebinum and Ajani Ibrahim have found the going tough in the current campaign.
