Pillars on track for second NPL title
Pillars striker Gambo Mohammed
Pillars first won the Nigeria Premier League crown in 2008 and coach Baba Ganaru told MTNFootball.com that the hard-fought win in Uyo will go a long way in determining where the league trophy will berth.
“We are on course. Akwa played well but we were better," said Ganaru.
"It was a sweet victory that means a lot to our title aspiration. I must commend the boys for playing their hearts out and according to plan.
Pillars now have 64 points from 37 games, a point ahead of second-placed Lobi Stars.
Their final game of the season will be against CAF Champions League campaigners Sunshine Stars.
Rangers slipped to third place on 61 points.
In another NPL fixture played on Wednesday, Wikki Tourists shocked Sharks in Port Harcourt after recording a 3-2 win over their hosts.
It took coach Ladan Bosso boys 10 minutes to snatch three points from Sharks.
Gomo Onduku put Sharks ahead in the ninth minute, before Manu Ahmed equalised for Wikki in the 80th minute.
Okemiri Ikechukwu gave Wikki the lead in the 83rd minute, before Felix Okoronkwo looked to have earned the host team a point with an 88th minute goal.
Wikki's winner was scored in the 89th minute by Alaba Johnson.
