The 2012 Federation Cup tie between Mbaise Lions and NPL side Kwara United has been moved from troubled Kaduna to Lokoja.

“Our match with Kwara United has been moved to Lokoja because of the security situation in Kaduna,” said Mbaise Lions financier and former Nigeria international Benedict Akwuegbu.

“The match will now be played on Monday.”

Akwuegbu praised the support the team have enjoyed from the Imo State government.

“The government through the honourable sports commissioner Kenneth Emelu and Ahizu Mbaise local government chairman, Kachi Nwoga, has assisted the team in various ways as part of their drive for youth empowerment,” he said.

Non-league Mbaise Lions created a shock by reaching the final of this year’s Imo State Federation Cup final, where they lost 3-1 to holders Heartland.

Mbaise Lions were founded in September.

Akwuegbu, who is also assistant general manager of Heartland, said the club is his own little way of giving back to his community.

The former international striker, who played in Austria and China, was also behind another club, Akwuegbu United, who also caused a stir in the country’s cup competition in 2003.
