NPL leaders Enugu Rangers crashed
out of the Federation Cup on Wednesday after they lost their second group game
3-2 to Sharks.
On Monday, Rangers, who were aiming for a league and cup double this season, were upset 1-0 by Prime FC.
Sharks veteran forward Victor Ezeji scored from the penalty spot in the added time of the first half after a hand ball by a Rangers player inside his 18-yard box.
Sharks utilised their first attempt at goal, while Rangers were wasteful in front of goal.
Rangers midfielder Chinedu Sunday saw his long-range shot come off the post, but nobody to convert it after just 25 minutes as the NPL leaders took the game to Sharks.
Super Eagles left back Juwon Oshaniwa showed class as he kept out Rangers and would later be booked for his resolute defending.
Ugonna Ugochukwu egualised for Rangers in the 54th minute off a corner kick by Eagles star Ejike Uzoenyi.
But the next minute Sharks regained their lead when Gomo Onduku dribbled past Rangers defenders before he fired home for his team’s second goal.
Sharks goalkeeper Okiemute Odah then fouled Rangers forward Chikeluba Ofoedu inside the box and the centre referee blew for a penalty, which Ofoedu tucked away to make it 2~2 in the 73rd minute.
However, Rangers defender and former 3SC player Chibuzor Madu brought Gomo down inside the box, but Sharks were not awarded a penalty.
The referee would later give a questionable penalty in the 74th minute, which Thankgod Amaefule put away to give Sharks victory.
In Lagos, El Kanemi Warriors and Crown FC settled for a goalless draw after a series of misses from both sides.
The group is now wide open as Pillars lead with four points, followed by El Kanemi with four points, while Crown are on two points. Kwara are bottom of the standings without any points.
The last round of games on Friday will pitch Crown against Kwara, while Pillars come up against El Kanemi to decide the two teams to advance to the last eight of the cup competition.
