Nigeria's U20 women’s team have
arrived Korea for a training camp ahead the World Cup, which begins
later this month in Japan.
The Falconets delegation comprising 25 players and 11 officials touched down at the Incheon International Airport, Seoul, Thursday at exactly 5.10pm (Korea time) after a 16-hour flight. After completing the necessary immigration formalities, the team was driven to its Namhe Sports Park Hotel which is on the outskirts of the capital.
While in Korea, the team will be exposed to top-profile warm-up. Last week, the girls were in Accra, Ghana, for a two-legged friendly against the Black Princesses of Ghana, losing one and winning the other.
Coach Edwin Okon said the training tour will be a final assessment of players who will make the final squad list.
"I know that as we are here every player would want to give her best since this will be final bus-stop for some of them," he said.
“'Therefore, I expect a serious competition for the 18 available shirts."
Nigeria open their World Cup campaign against South Korea on August 19 in Saitama and three days later take on Brazil. They face Italy on August 26 in the group stage.
Only the two top teams will progress into the quarter final to face the first and second teams of Group A. Okon, whose girls swept past Zimbabwe and Democratic Republic of Congo in the African qualifiers without conceding a goal, said his mission is to get the reigning vice-champions of the world in super competition-mood before the end of the two-week camping period.
“We have conquered Africa and now, it is time to prepare for the world. We have a massive task on our hands because the 2010 Class got to the final of the World Cup. We just have to prepare ourselves adequately to be able to go one better,” said Okon.
