The Super Eagles have been one of Africa’s top representatives in world football and indeed have been at the forefront of Africa’s ever-growing presence and influence in the international football arena.
Nigeria first made the world sit up and take notice in 1994, when they qualified for their first ever World Cup finals, which took place in the USA. They topped their first round group, thanks to wins over Bulgaria and Greece, and bowed out in the last 16 to Italy. Players such as Stephen Keshi, Daniel Amokachi, Sunday Oliseh and Finidi George all made a huge impression at the tournament.
Four years later in France, Nigeria again went through to the last 16, with a notable 3-2 win over Spain in the first round of matches, before losing 4-1 to Denmark. Stars of the show for the west African side included Jay Jay Okocha, Celestine Babayaro, Nwankwo Kanu and Taribo West.
Nigeria did manage to qualify the Korea & Japan World Cup, but bowed out after the first round following defeats to Argentina and Sweden and a draw with England. Nigeria failed to qualify for Germany 2006, being pipped on points difference by surprise package Angola.
Currently ranked 32nd in the world (in 1994 the Super Eagles were as high as fifth), Nigeria trail Group B leaders Tunisia by two points and with one game to go, their chances of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup appear slim, despite having a star-studded side including the likes of Obafemi Martins, John Obi Mikel, Joseph Yobo, John Utaka and Kanu.
Nigeria have a very good record in the African Cup of Nations – having won the tournament in 1980 and 1994. While in 1984, 1988, 1990 and 2000 they finished as runners up in the finals. The Super Eagles have also on six occasion finished in third spot.
Nigeria’s local league, the Nigerian Premier League, has traditionally been one of the strongest leagues on the continent, with its clubs having had a fair amount of success in the African Champions League – Enyimba won the tournament twice (2003 and 2004), while Heartland were losing finalists in 2009. Bayelsa United are current champions, while Enyimba have won five titles since the turn of the century.
