Ivoirians Didier Drogba and Yaya Touré are the only African representatives on the list of 32 nominees for the UEFA Best Player Award 2011/12, which has just been unveiled by the European authority.

Journalists from the 53 member countries of UEFA will elect the three finalists who will be announced on 14 August, and the award will be presented a fortnight later in Monaco, at the draw for the group phase of the Champions League 2012/13.

This is the second edition of the trophy created by UEFA President Michel Platini, an award which honours the best player in Europe, no matter what his origin may be.

Last year the prize was awarded to the Argentinian striker from FC Barcelona, Lionel Messi, who garnered the most votes ahead of his teammate, Xavi Hernandez, and the star from Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Also featuring on this year’s list of nominees is the Italian-Ghanaian, Mario Balotelli.
