Arsenals have established themselves as one of the forces in the
Ghanaian Premier League since joining the top flight six seasons ago.
The club somehow solely financed by Alhaji Yakubu Moro was formed in 1978 and play their home games at the Berekum Golden City Park.
Berekum Arsenal’s kits and name are inspired by the North London club Arsenal FC. The club have devoted fans drawn from the stipulated 46,287 inhabitants of the area.
The Gunners enjoyed victories against giants Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak at their favourite Golden City Park home ground but the venue is being perceived as an intimidation pot, noted for crowd violence.
Berekum Arsenals became the first club from the Brong Ahafo Region to play in CAF competition by qualifying for the CAF Confederation Cup in 2006.
The club have produced some exciting talents in Ghana football. Udinese midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu who is key member of Ghana’s current squad played almost his entire career on the local scene with Arsenal.
The club, who recently appointed experienced Nana Awuah as coach, also nurtured ex-Fulham defender John Pantsil who started his career with the club.
But the Gunners will have to do without their striker Nana Poku, who won the league’s top scorer with 16 goals last season, as he has been transferred to cross-town rivals Berekum Chelsea in the off-season.
The club will open their season home-away-from-home at the Cape Coast Stadium with Accra Hearts of Oak due to suspension.
