Annan and three others Vasileios Pliatsikas, Alexander Baumjohann and Philip Hofmann have been told they have no future at the Veltins Arena.
The 25-year-old has been overlooked by coach Huub Stevens in recent pre-season friendlies despite joining the team's camp in Donaueschingen.
Annan was not on the bench when Schalke played high profile matches against Italian giants AC Milan and Udinese.
He was also absent in Friday night's heavy 5-0 win over lower-tier side Magdeburg.
The diminutive defensive midfielder is on the verge of joining Dutch top-flight side Vitesse Arnhem where he spent last season on loan.
