Zahoui on his way out
François Zahoui
Boosted by his impressive record, the former
Africa Sports coach managed to hold on to his job with the arrival of Sidy
Diallo as President of the Ivoirian Football Federation last September; but he
will not be able to avoid the separation that was planned well before the start
of the Afcon, following the Elephants’ failure in the final.
Sidy Diallo, who inherited Zahoui along with
his position as head of the FIF, has always wished for someone more “prestigious”
at the head of the selection, independent of the results achieved by the
current coach.
And it must be said that the former AS Nancy
player’s record speaks for itself.
Before the clash against Zambia, Côte d’Ivoire had
only been beaten once in eighteen encounters under the Zahoui era. The latter can boast 16 victories in 19
matches on the Elephants’ bench.
But since the cursed evening in Libreville, he
has had no news from his federation, who are already at work behind the scenes searching
for his replacement.
The aftermath of the last minute failure to procure a second
continental crown will probably go down in the annals of Ivoirian football as the
biggest slap in the face following a job well done...
