Côte d'Ivoire qualified for their first ever World Cup finals in Germany 2006. The ‘Elephants’ however failed to make it past the group stages, finishing behind Argentina and Netherlands with their only victory coming from a 3-2 win over Serbia and Montenegro.

The country’s most famous footballer is surely Chelsea star Didier Drogba, who is the nations leading goal scorer with 33 goals to date. However, an increasing number of Ivory Coast stars have made their name in the world’s top leagues - Kolo Toure was an integral part of the Arsenal team before a move to Manchester City, as is his brother Yaya Toure at Barcelona.

Other top Ivorian players include Emmanuel Eboué Didier Zokora (the country’s most capped international), as well as Aruna Dindane and Salomon Kalou.

The Elephants, currently ranked 19th in the world, secured their place in the 2010 World and African Cup finals by winning group E, which included Burkina Faso, Malawi and Guinea.

The Ivory Coast have taken part in the African Cup of Nations on 16 occasions, winning the tournament back in 1992. In 2006, the Elephants ended as runners up to Egypt, while they have on four occasions finished in third position.

Asec Mimosa are the Ivory Coast’s most famous team, the club being responsible for including nearly all of the country’s current European-based stars; Drogba being the one exception. Asec have won the Côte d'Ivoire Premier Division 22 times; the next best club being Africa Sports National with 16 titles.
