Côte d’Ivoire Cup: ASEC through to quarters
Hugues Zagbayou, goal scorer against EFYM
After a failed attempt by Samba Diabaté (6th), ASEC found the gap at the quarter hour mark thanks to a low shot by Zagbayou Hugues, following an excellent assist by Seri Jean Michaël (1-0, 16th).
Shortly after, the dominating Yellow and Black missed the opportunity to complicate matters further. On another perfect assist by Bougouhi Jean Jacques, Samba Diabaté failed to get the better of the Ecoliers ‘keeper, Kotoko Mohamed (19th).
Driven back, EFYM finally awoke from their reverie and reacted. The response led by Fofana Moryké could have had a better ending, were it not for ASEC goalkeeper, Komenan Sylvain’s valuable save (23e). But seven minutes later, Fofana was on the attack again, and this time he did not miss the mark. After outrunning central defender Robert Sankara, he left Komenan Sylvain with no chance (1-1, 30th).
The game balanced out between the two teams until the 44th minute, when Zagbayou Hugues put his side in the lead. On a Okou Zahui cross, Zagbayou beat the keeper to the ball to double the score (2-1, 44e).
But after the break, EFYM established parity once again through the same Fofana Moryké, royally assisted by his captain Zahouo Bi Roméo at the penalty spot (2-2, 55e).
The Ecoliers then came back into the game securing possession, forcing the Yellow and Black to adopt unsporting behaviour from time to time in order to stay alive; an option which proved to be detrimental to Roger Ouégnin’s team with the expulsion of Iddi Ganiyu after he deliberately fouled EFYM defender Komenan Jean Philippe (64th).
But this numerical inferiority had no impact on the will of the Mimos to continue on their adventure. The trophy holders resisted the pressure applied by the Ecoliers and succeeded in their hold up in the last minutes of the game, thanks to Samba Diabaté. Following a dismal first half, the Yellow and Black striker headed a Seri Jean Michaël cross - his second decisive assist of the night - victoriously into the net (3-2, 83e).
Sébastien Desabre’s men held onto this lead until the end of the game, thereby qualifying for the quarter finals.
At the Parc des Sports de Treichville, JCAT outclassed AS Denguélé at the end of a penalty shootout (4-2), after neither team could distinguish themselves (1-1) at the end of regulation time.
At the end of a fiercely contested clash, Stella Club d’Adjamé also validated their ticket for the quarter finals by outclassing ASI d’Abengourou (1-0) at the Stade Robert Champroux de Marcory.
