Super Division Six!
AFAD de Djékanou
USC Bassam’s victory over ASI d’Abengourou (4-3) in a postponed Group A, week 14 match of Côte d’Ivoire’s Ligue 1, has revealed the sixth and final qualifier for the Super Division 2012.
The Insulaires de Bassam have qualified for the second half of the championship for the first time in their history, a feat which now puts them in line to compete for the national title. This achievement by the Bassam team came at the expense of the reigning champion, Africa Sports d’Abidjan, who ended just off the podium and thus out of the race to defend their crown.
But this elimination of the Aiglons takes nothing away from the merit of the six candidates.
In Pool A, Séwé Sports de San-Pedro have remained in charge. Uncontested leaders, the Portuaires reached the end of the first phase with a six-point lead on second-placed Stella Club d’Adjamé (16 points).
The third-placed team of the last championship, Séwé are now aiming for first place on the final podium. As for the Magnans d’Adjamé, their aim is to win back a title that has escaped them since 1984.
In Pool B, AFAD (23 points) thwarted all the forecasts by seizing first place ahead of ASEC Mimosas.
After a disappointing start to the season, including elimination from the round of sixteen of the Confederations Cup, the Mimos were able to raise the bar again by qualifying for the Super Division.
They will be competing alongside JCAT in the home straight, a team who benefitted from the defeat of AS Denguélé by ES Bingerville (0-1) to consolidate their third place and grab the last qualifying ticket of the group.
At the other end of the classification, the battle to avoid relegation to the Ligue 2 will play out between ASI d’Abengourou, Issia Wazi, ASC Ouragahio and SOA.
The two promoted teams, EFYM and ES Bingerville have maintained their places in the elite, alongside Africa and AS Denguélé.
