Elite One: Union crowned champion!
Joël Babanda and the Nassara were crowned Cameroon champion
At two weeks before the end of the championship, club president Franck Happi’s men secured the fifth title of their history, following those of 1969, 1976, 1978 and 1990.
With an eleventh consecutive win, Union also equalled the record set by Coton Sport in 2007.
Bonaventure Djonkep’s team opened the score in the 40th minute through Charles Edoa Nga, before extending the gap in the second half with a brace by Joël Babanda (55th and 71st minutes).
Angoh Mintya put a point on the board for the New Stars when he scored an own goal in the 80th minute, but made up for it two minutes later when he added to the score line of the Nassara.
The Cotonculteurs of Coton Sport might have lost all hope of adding a twelfth title to their list of trophies, but they did manage to secure their ticket for the next Champions League when they beat their closest pursuer Panthère du Ndé 1-0 in Garoua, at the same securing second place in the league.
The Bangangté club still find themselves in third position at the end of the 24th week, and are in a battle with the New Stars, YOSA and Unisport for a place in the Confederation Cup.
After beating Renaissance 2-1 in Yaoundé, Flambeau de l’Ouest moved into fourth place, just one point from the Wildcats of Ndé and just ahead of the Académiciens de Bamenda, who were held to a draw 0-0 by the Astres de Douala.
Canon Sportif de Yaoundé tasted victory again when they claimed a win against Scorpion de Bé on their own soil (1-0), thereby assuring their position in the elite.
Kpa Kum move back up to seventh place ahead of Njalla Quan de Limbé, who were held to a draw (3-3) at home by Tiko United de Buea.
And finally Aigle Royal de la Menoua suffered a defeat when they fell to Sable de Batié 1-2 at home in Dschang. These two teams will fight till the bitter end to avoid relegation, the fate that Scorpion have already been condemned to for some time now.
