Canon grab Central derby

Unbeaten over four encounters, Canon Sportif de Yaoundé beat Renaissance de Ngoumou 2-1 on Sunday at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo on Day 8 of the MTN Elite One.

With Canon in the lead 1-0 at the break following a Frédéric Nguidjol goal at 25 minutes, Renaissance took things in hand equalising through Jean Claude Bassilekin as the second half got underway.

But the joy was short-lived amongst Jean Pierre Fiala’s men, with the Kpa Kum captain Ngom Balonga giving his team Canon the decisive advantage on the 49th minute.

The score remained the same and while Canon continue to climb up the league table, Renaissance are still in search of their first victory of the season.

The other derby that took place this Sunday saw the two western clubs, Panthère du Ndé and Sable de Batié clash at the Stade de Bangangté.

In the absence of coach Dieudonné Sandjong who has resigned, Panthère du Ndé have been under the care of François Nnanga.

Célestine Ketcha Courtes’ protégés opened the score on the 10th minute through Joseph Kameni, then managed to fight off Sable’s attacks, thanks in particular to an excellent Alain Tchoumte, despite his final slip-up in the dying moments of the match.

Nzui Manto thus add their fourth consecutive draw to their collection.

Day 8 also saw the top teams triumph with Unisport’s victory on the grounds of Tiko United, Coton Sport’s win against Astres in Garoua and Union’s domination of Aigle de la Menoua at the Stade de la Réunification.

Notaworthy was YOSA’s important win against Scorpion, and the battle of the promoted teams won by New Star away against Njalla Quan.

The Cotonculteurs conserve the lead in the championship ahead of Union and Unisport, although Nassara Kamakai have a match in hand.

Panthère, New Star, YOSA and Astres lie in wait, ready to ambush the leaders, while right at the bottom of the table, Tiko and Renaissance bring up the rear with three measly points each.
