Union enjoy lead, Coton in the doldrums
Week 17 of the Elite One enjoyed its share of surprises on Sunday afternoon, and the biggest of them came from Bamenda, where the reigning champions, Coton Sport, were playing away.
It appears that their win earlier in the week against Renaissance was just a short moment of respite for Sébastien Ndzana Kana and his teammates, who fell straight back into the crisis that has been plaguing them for some time now.
Gabriel Haman’s men fell 2-1 to the young team from Bamenda, thus dropping down to fifth position, while their opponent of the day moved up to a remarkable second position, just three points short of the leader, Union Sportive de Douala.
Franck Happi saw his team string together their fourth victory since the championship resumed, when they beat Renaissance de Ngoumou 3-1 at the Stade de la Réunification. Their win further improved the rhythm they have set at the head of the standings, which their pursuers are struggling to follow.
On their side, Canon Sportif de Yaoundé broke the curse they have been under when they outclassed Panthère Sportive du Ndé for the first time at home (1-0) in three seasons.
This was Kpa Kum’s first win in the return phase, while the Big Cats of Bangangté suffered their second consecutive defeat following their slip-up at home against Aigle de la Menoua.
No winner emerged between Astres and Unisport at the Stade de la Réunification, in a match that ended as a goalless draw. This is the fourth consecutive draw for the Brésiliens de Bépanda, while the Flambeau de l’Ouest have not won since week 14.
At the bottom of the table, the status quo is maintained with draws between Scorpion and Njalla Quan in Garoua, and Aigle Royal and Tiko United in Dschang.
Finally, New Stars managed a fantastic feat when they beat Sable de Batié in Mbouda, on the score of 1-0.
