Tunisia can boast a proud recent history in global and African competition, having qualified for the last four instalments of the FIFA World Cup, including the 2010 edition in South Africa.

They have been to four finals tournaments in all, creating history in 1978 when they became the first team from Africa to win a World Cup match, beating Mexico 3-1.

They also held defending champions West Germany to a 0-0 draw that year, but bowed out in the first round, as they have done in 1998, 2002 and 2006.

The Carthage Eagles have also been to every Nations Cup finals since 1994, winning the 2004 event on home soil after disappointments in 1996 and 1965 when they finished as runners-up.

The current side is coached by Portuguese national Humberto Coelho, who played for Paris St Germain and Benfica in a star-studded career that also included 63 caps for his national side.

Tunisia’s top flight is the Ligue Professionnelle 1, formed in 1921 and featuring 14 teams. The reigning champions are Esperance (who easily hold the record for the most titles, 22). Esperance, Club Africain and Etoile Sahel have all won the African Champions League once.
