Known as Sokoor Al-Jediane (Desert Hawks), Sudan has a proud record in the African Cup of Nations, especially during the early years of the competition. They were one of only three countries – the others being Egypt and Ethiopia, to take part in the inaugural competition, back in 1957.
Sudan went on to secure second place finishes in 1959 and 1963, before winning the tournament on home soil in 1970, thanks to a 1-0 win over Ghana in the final.
Currently ranked 113th in the world, Sudan has however never made it as far as the World Cup finals. During the recent 2010 World and African Cup qualifiers, Sudan made it as far as the third round of qualifying stages, but with one game to go, are last in a group that contains Ghana, Mali and Benin, managing only a single point thus far (a 1-1 draw with Mali).
The national team is made up entirely of locally-based players, whose compete in the Sudan Premier League, which was created in 1962. Al Hilal are the traditional giants of the Sudanese game, having won 24 titles.
Al-Merreikh have won 17 championships and are the current title holders, while only three other clubs have ever won the league. Al Hilal have twice finished as runners up in the African Champions League, and this year they finished in fourth position in the competition.
