Rwanda is a country that has suffered horrific violence in its past as a result of political unrest which was caused by tribal warfare and genocide. Now, since their reappearance on the world scene in 1994 through footballs national association, the people of Rwanda can put their differences behind them through the sport.
Currently ranked 114th on the FIFA World Rankings, the young football nation has a long way to go in terms of accolades and awards. Still football is a big part of the country and serves as a unifying tool for the people of the nation.
Rwanda, nicknamed the Wasps or the Amavubi Stars, have not as of yet qualified for a World Cup Final and only reached their first ever African Nations Cup in 2004. Their biggest triumph on the footballing scene came in 1999 when they hosted and consequently won the 1999 CECAFA (Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations) Cup.
The Wasps coach at present is former Croatian professional footballer, Branko Tucak, who took over the mantle in 2008. Tucak has seen some success thus far during his time as coach getting the county to achieve it’s highest ever FIFA World Ranking of 78th in December 2008. However, a lot of that success must fall on the shoulders of his predecessor and fellow Croatian Josip Kuze.
Overall, since their reassertion into world football in 1994 Rwanda has made huge progress and, with the right structures at club level, a lot is expected of them in the future.
