Currently languishing at 169th on the FIFA World rankings list, Mauritania have never come close to qualifying for both the African Cup of Nations and the World Cup finals.

Their status as football minnows on the African continent is perhaps underlined by the fact that the country only has two football stadiums.

Mauritania lost all six of their 2010 World and African qualifying matches, in a group that included Rwanda and Morocco.

The national team is made up of a combination of locally-based player and several plying their trade in the lower divisions in France.

The local league in this French-speaking Arabic country (with a total population of just under 3 million), is known as the Première Division and comprises of 12 clubs.

The current champions are SNIM, who triumphed by a single point over Concorde.
