Lesotho’s national football team, nicknamed ‘Likuena’ (Crocodiles), have never qualified for the FIFA World Cup or the CAF Africa Cup of Nations.
The small, landlocked nation in Southern Africa is generally regarded as one of the continent’s weaker football sides, though they were runners-up in the COSAFA Cup in the year 2000.
Lesotho’s football association was founded in 1932 and affiliated itself to FIFA and CAF in 1964.
The Crocodiles’ coach is Leslie Notsi, who took over in a caretaker role in September 2009, and they play their home games at the Sesotho Stadium in Maseru. The venue has a capacity of 20,000.
Their team is generally locally-based, though they do have some footballers playing in South Africa’s domestic leagues, with the most notable being Orlando Pirates defender Lehlohonolo Seema.
The country’s top flight football division is the Lesotho Premier League, formed in 1970 and presently featuring 16 clubs. The reigning champions are Lioli FC.
Matlama FC and Royal Lesotho Defense Force have won eight titles apiece to top the all-time list of championships won. Lesotho Correctional Services have won four titles.
