The Guinea-Bissau national football team, nicknamed ‘Djurtus’, have never qualified for either the FIFA World Cup or the CAF Africa Cup of Nations. Until 1975 they were known as the Portuguese Guinea national football team. Djurtus play their home games at the Estadio 24 de Setembro in Bissau.

The team’s best performance in an international tournament was a runners-up berth in the Amilcar Cabral Cup in 1983 when they were beaten in the final by Senegal.

The present group of players in the Guinea-Bissau national team is a mix of African and European-based players, with quite a few based in the country’s former colonisers, Portugal.

The country’s top flight football division is known as the Compeonato Nacional da Guine-Bissau. It was formed in 1975 and the reigning champions are Clube de Futebol “Os Balantes” from Mansoa.

Sporting Clube de Bissau, with 13 titles to their name, are the most successful side in the championship’s history. Sport Bissau e Benfica are second in the list with eight titles, but they last won the league in 1990.
