Burkina Faso’s best international achievement came in 1998, when the national team – the Stallions, finished fourth in the African Cup of Nations, which was hosted in Burkina Faso. Other than that, the Stallions have taken part in five African Cup of Nations, exiting at the first round each time. They have never participated in a World Cup final.
During the 2010 World Cup qualifiers, Burkina Faso (currently ranked 55th) performed admirably, finishing four points behind group winners Ivory Coast. The Stallions won three games, beating Guinea twice, and Malawi once. Moumouni Dagano has been prolific for the Stallions during their last three World Cup qualification campaigns, scoring 11 goals.
A large number of the current national team play their club football in Europe, in countries such as France, Portugal and Germany. There are also a handful of home-based national team players, who ply their trade in the Burkinabé Premier League. This league was created in 1962 and Étoile Filante Ouagadougou have won the most titles (12).
