As one of the smaller football nations across the globe, Benin have only been taking part in international football since 1975 when Dahomey officially became Benin. Since then this minuscule country has achieved some marvelous feats in respect to the size of the football playing population compared to that of other African countries.
Benin, or Les Ecureuils (The Squirrels) as they are nicknamed, have reached their so called prime in their most recent years managing to qualify for the African Nations Cup in 2004 and 2008. This success and their play at present have also seen the team climb to it’s highest ever FIFA World Ranking which is currently in 67th position. Sadly, however, the national team has never qualified for a World Cup Final, but that is something they are looking to rectify in the future.
A large reason for their improved performances has been due to a number of their national players plying their trade overseas in Europe where they have gained valuable experience, which has served the well in international matches.
Prior to 2004, only Moussa Latoundji played professional football abroad. Now with numerous players traveling to the far ends of the globe to play their sport, the Les Ecureuils have definitely benefited.
The coach of Benin at present is French Football manager, Michel Dussuyer, Who was appointed as the head coach in June 2008. As a former professional player, his time as a coach has seen him in charge of AS Cannes, Guinea and as the assistant coach to Henri Michel for the Ivory Coast.
Now with the experience of those African countries under his belt the Benin people will be hoping he can lead them to greater success.
