Wolves pounce on Leopards
Youngster Augustine Amutu is to spearhead Warri Wolves strike
force against South Africa’s Black Leopards in Sunday’s Confederation Cup tie.
The 18-year-old Amutu has scored twice since his transfer from lower league club Mighty Jets of Jos and started in the 2-0 home win over FC Kallon of Sierra Leone in the previous round of the competition.
His strike partner Jude Aneke, who was the Nigeria Premier League hotshot with 20 goals last season, has so far netted five goals this term.
Bereaved midfielder Uche Ossai is the only doubt for Sunday’s clash.
The defensive midfielder, who is part of Nigeria’s Super Eagles home-based team, shut out the legendary Mohammed Kallon when Wolves eliminated FC Kallon.
“We have left the door open for Ossai, who is burying his father today (Saturday), otherwise our squad is intact for the match against Black Leopards,” Wolves spokesman Timi Ebikagboro informed MTNFootball.com
“The coaches would have to access the emotional stability of the player if he chooses to rejoin the squad for the game on Sunday.”
The core of the Wolves led by goalkeeper Chigozie Agbim, defender Azubuike Egwuekwe and striker Sunday Mba, all part of the home-based Eagles, is poised for Sunday’s showdown.
Wolves will earn 50,000 Naira-a-man (about $300) as bonus if they beat the South Africans, who incidentally parade Nigerian forward Joshua Obaje.
The South Africans arrived Warri, which is in the oil-rich Niger Delta, on Friday and trained at the training pitch of the Warri City Stadium later that day.
They are due to train at the match venue later Saturday.
