Club Africain celebrating their win over Sunshine Stars
After finishing first in their pool in the group phase and only having suffered one defeat against Interclube, Club Africain eliminated the Nigerians of Sunshine Stars in the semi-final, on an aggregate score of 1-0.
The historic club from the Bab Jedid quarter were CAF Champions League champions in 1991 against Ugandan outfit Villa SC, and were runners-up twice in the African Cup Winners' Cup (a competition that fused with the CAF Cup in 2004 to give birth to the CAF Confederation Cup), in 1990 and 1999.
Although he came in an unfortunate second place as the head of Espérance Sportive de Tunis in the CAF Champions League 2010, the Red and White coach, Faouzi Benzarti does have three continental titles to add to his achievements, namely the CAF Champions League and the African Supercup 1994 as coach of the Blood and Gold, and the 2006 CAF Cup when he headed Etoile sportive du Sahel.
Al Ifriki face up to Moghreb Association Sportive de Fès who also ended first in their pool in the group phase where they remained undefeated.
The Moroccan club were defeated 2-1 in Angola by Interclube in the first leg of their semi-final, but clinched their qualification for the final on a goal scored in the 95th minute by Chems Eddine Chtibi, sending his audience into a frenzy at the Complexe Sportif de Fès.
Rachid Taoussi’s men have the opportunity to win a first major continental trophy for the club which was founded in 1946 by Haj Driss Benzakour.
Kick-off for the encounter to be refereed by the Algerian Djemal Haimoudi at the Stade de Radès will be at 17h00 GMT.
The second leg of the final will take place on 4 December at the Complexe Sportif de Fès.
This is the second important encounter between Moroccans and Tunisians following the Champions League final won by Espérance de Tunis over Wydad de Casablanca.
These two North-African nations fighting on the roof of the continent through their clubs, will meet again on 23 January 2012 in Libreville at the Africa Cup of Nations.
