Sunshine Stars have
said they want to be only the second Nigerian club to be crowned African
champions after they beat ASO Chlef in Algeria.
Enyimba won the foremost African club competition in 2003 and 2004 and Sunshine boosted their chances of marching into the semi-finals of this year’s tournament after they recorded a massive 2-1 win in Algeria on Friday night.
The Akure club consolidated their second place in Group A with the win at ASO Chlef as they are now on seven points, while Tunisian rivals Esperance and Etoile du Sahel will face off Saturday night in the other group game.
Esperance have nine points and Etoile are on four points.
Sunshine goal scorer in Algeria Medrano Tamen told MTNFootball.com they are now confident they can go all the way in the competition.
"It was a tough game, we both went into the game with aim of winning. We thank God we came out victorious,” said the Cameroonian midfielder who opened scoring in Algeria in first half stoppage time after he was set up by Izu Azuka.
“I am now confident that we will win the trophy with the way we played and won this game.”
“We are on course and I see us getting the ultimate, which is the trophy, we are good for it no doubt," added goalkeeper Moses Ocheje.
“We have again shown that we are equal to the task. We ensured we were not distracted and remained focused, and this has again paid off.”
Dele Olorundare further told MTNFootball.com that this was a very important win in his team’s quest to be crowned African champions.
“I felt different after this victory because it was very special, it was very important that we won so as to stay on track to qualify to the next stage in the competition,” said the striker, who opened scoring for Sunshine in the reverse fixture in Ijebu-Ode a fortnight ago.
“ASO were a very difficult team, but we were determined to beat them.”
On September 2, the Nigerian flag bearers will be guests of group leaders and defending champions Esperance in Tunis.
Esperance won the first clash in Nigeria 2-0.
