Angry fans attack Sunshine Stars
Sunshine achieved the double over the Algerian club after they again won in Chlef 2-1 after they earned a 2-0 home win a fortnight ago.
The fans pelted stones and other dangerous objects at the Nigerian players on the pitch after Cameroonian midfielder Medrano Tamen opened scoring in first half added time and the attack intensified when the Akure club netted a second goal by Ukeyima Akombo in the second half.
Medrano told MTNFootball.com that they were lucky not to be hurt from the attack.
“It was not easy because the fans were clearly disappointed after I scored the first goal, they could not swallow it any longer and so they started throwing stones and other things at us right on the pitch. It was a surprise that no one tried to stop them even the police,” the midfielder reported.
“It got worse when Akombo scored the second goal. They added broken blocks to what they were throwing at us, but thank God we were able to end the match without any injuries.
“But we could not leave the stadium immediately after the match as we were held back by the police for about 25 minutes before we were led out of the stadium after the fans had left.”
The victorious Sunshine Stars are due in Nigeria on Sunday via Morocco.
“We will leave Chlef for Algiers this morning from where we will connect another flight to Casablanca. We will leave Casablanca for Lagos on Sunday by 6.am,” Medrano informed MTNFootball.com
