The Group A match played in Sousse saw Esperance come into the game with nine points already, having beaten Etoile 1-0 in the reverse fixture just ten days ago.

Etoile came into the game with just four points and would have watched in agony as Nigerian team Sunshine Stars won against Algeria’s ASO Chlef yesterday and moved from four points to seven themselves.

But instead of fighting to try and earn a draw or even to win the match, Etoile had to a settle for a 2-0 loss after the game was abandoned 20 minutes before the end after fans invaded the pitch.

Esperance had scored two goals in the 41st and 71st minutes respectively.

Karim Aouadhi was first on the score sheet and Yannick Ndjeng netted the second goal.

The game was called off immediately after the second goal.

The goals infuriated the home supporters who used fireworks to scare their rival set of supporters.

The fans ran onto the field, took over the pitch and forced the match officials to leave the field and this resulted in an abandoned game and saw the points go to Esperance.
