Luís Mamona João, nicknamed ‘Lama’ was part of Angola’s squad that did duty in the 2006 World Cup in Germany, although he was behind the pecking order to Joao Ricardo.
Two years later however, ‘Lama’ played for Angola in the 2008 Nations Cup in Ghana, making a name for himself with some excellent saves.
The 31-year-old is a rare breed these days, a ‘one-club’ man, having spent his entire professional career at Petro Atletico since making his debut in 2001 (his international debut came in 2003).
At 1.87m tall ‘Lama’ is no giant, but should have enough physical presence to command his box and is a greater communicator with the defence.
He has been in and out of the national side down the years, but appears to be back in favour with coach Gustavo Ferrín.
Tournament Review:
Played in all three matches for Angola, but was badly exposed in the 2-1 loss to Cape Verde.
He was at fault for both goals as his poor handling created chances for the islanders. He will be disappointed with his tournament showing.
