Libya battle for AFCON survival

Libya will do battle to save their 2012 Africa Cup dreams when they face Senegal on Sunday in a final Group A match at the Estadio de Bata.

The North African nation have failed to hit top gear in Equatorial Guinea despite their unbeaten run in the qualifiers in the midst of civil strife in Libya last year.

Libya have just one point from two games going into the game against Senegal.

A 1-0 defeat to co-hosts Equatorial Guinea and a 2-2 draw against Zambia has left them with just one more chance against eliminated Senegal to keep their dreams alive.

Libya coach Marcos Paqueta said he still has a lot of respect for Senegal despite their embarrassing early elimination after the West African juggernaut failed to roar to life.

"We hope to map out the right strategy to face them,” Paqueta said.

However, a win for Libya over Senegal will also mean they be counting on a little help from Group A leaders Equatorial Guinea on six points to beat second-placed Zambia on four points across the sea in Malabo to stand a mathematical chance of qualifying to the quarterfinals.

Furthermore, Libya will be searching for their first win at the Africa Cup in 30 years.

Their last win came in 1982 when they hosted the tournament and beat Zambia 2-1 in the semi-finals on their way to finishing second.

Meanwhile, bottom-placed Senegal hope to depart Bata with some pride after failing to collect a single point at the competition, before heading back to Dakar where an inquest awaits embattled coach Amara Traore.
