They beat Sudan 3-1 in their opening match, a routine win that showed their attacking class as they swept home 3-0. Goals from James Chamanga, Jacob Mulenga and Felix Katongo eased Chipolopolo to victory and should have been the impetus for a quarterfinal place.
They were brought crashing down to earth by Cameroon however, going down 5-1 in their next game as they came up against an Indomitable Lions side who were still smarting from their opening defeat to Egypt.
Chris Katongo scored a consolation goal late on, but by that time the Zambians were already 5-0 down as goals Geremi, Joseph-Desire Job (two), Achille Emana and Samuel Eto'o put them on the back foot.
They could still qualify for the quarterfinals with a win over Egypt in their last encounter, but could only manage a 1-1 draw, which in itself should be viewed as a good result against the eventual champions.
Amr Zaki put The Pharaohs ahead, before Chris Katongo again scored late on to seal a point.
