Doe - red card cannot steal my joy

Equatorial Guinea defender Laurence Doe says the red card he received at the end of the team's win over Senegal on Wednesday cannot take away from him the joy of victory.

The 2012 Africa Nations Cup co-hosts caused one of the biggest upsets in Africa Cup history after beating Group A favourites Senegal 2-1 and in the process ejecting the Teranga Lions from the competition.

The Liberian-born defender told MTNFootball.com in a post-match interview at Estadio de Bata that Equatorial Guinea’s quarterfinal qualification is historic.

"The red card came because I was overjoyed and now I am just concentrating in the quarterfinals," Doe said.

"No, I am not disappointed because you accept that. That is football, you accept what comes your way and unfortunately I took a red card."

Doe will miss Equatorial Guinea’s last Group A match against second placed Zambia on January 29 in Malabo but will return for the February 4 quarterfinals.

Equatorial Guinea have a maximum six points from two matches, Zambia are second and two points behind them, Libya are third on one point while Senegal are bottom on zero points.

And Doe of Al Shabab in Oman said beating Senegal to dump them out of the competition was a great shock.

"For me it is a surprise. It is the first time we are taking part in this Africa Cup and to qualify to the quarterfinals," Doe said.

"It is historic. You know Senegal are one of the best teams in Africa and they were one of the favorites in our group. So to beat Senegal is big and very important to us.

"It is very important for them (the co-hosts) to go to the quarterfinals - it is a very important moment in the history of Equatorial Guinea football."
