Tournament Review:

Gyan was definitely the star of the Ghanaian team coming into the 2012 Afcon tournament and much was expected of him.

He may not have played at his best (he was carrying a injury), but he was still classes above a lot of his teammates and opponents.

One of the highlights of the tournament was his superb free-kick goal against Mali in Ghana’s second group game, curling the ball around the wall and into the top right-hand corner of the net - a goal which proved to be the winner.

He also created the second goal in that game as he put Dede Ayew through on goal to score.

Sadly, though, the biggest disappointment of the tournament for Gyan will be the fact that he missed a penalty in his country’s semifinal against Zambia.

Pre-Tournament Profile:

Asamoah Gyan is expected to play a key role for the Black Stars as they go chasing their fifth African crown in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

Gyan has come into his own in the last two major tournaments for Ghana (2010 Nations and World Cup) where he emerged as the team’s top goal scorer.

Ghana’s success at the tournament will depend very much on the form of the Al Ain attacker but he also has a knack for missing glorious opportunities.

He was blamed for Ghana’s failure to host and win the tournament in 2008 but has metamorphosed into the darling boy going into the next edition. He will be one of the key players of the tournament in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
