After missing out on the African Cup of Nations in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea earlier this year, Algeria were able to secure their place at next year’s tournament with a 3-0 aggregate win over Libya on Sunday evening.

The second leg match in Blida saw two early goals from El Arbi Hillel Soudani and Islam Slimani hand the home side a comfortable lead, adding to their 1-0 win in the first leg match in Libya last month.

It was Soudani who scored late own in that game who opened the scoring on Sunday night for the Fennec Foxes in only the fifth minute of the match.

The Algerian attacker was played through on goal with a sublime pass and made no mistake with a deadly finish to had his side the lead.

Three minutes later and the home side had doubled their lead through Slimani, virtually shutting the door on Libya’s hopes of back-to-back continental tournaments.

However, beside from the opening two goals, there was very little in terms of goal mouth action despite Libya trying to assert the pressure on the Algerian goal.

The Libyans attacked with vigour and passion, but they lacked creativity in the final third of the ifeld and were unable to open up a stubborn Algerian defence.

For the Fennec Foxes, they seemed content to hold onto their lead and offered very little in attack and instead focused on their solid defence.

In the end the Libyans could not mount any comeback as Algeria put their name down as the last team to qualify for the 2013 Afcon tournament.
